Momentum Metrics Networks: Catalyzing Students’ Postsecondary Preparation and Transitions

The Momentum Metrics Networks are year-long initiatives that provided dedicated coaching and support to a cohort of districts in both Tennessee and Texas to identify data-driven strategies for improving the postsecondary preparation and success of high school students, with a focus on closing equity gaps for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds.

The networks are grounded in ESG’s report From Tails to Heads: Building Momentum for Postsecondary Success, which offered a new set of metrics for states and communities to prioritize to help more students – particularly students of color and students from low-income backgrounds – successfully move to and through postsecondary education and training. The “Momentum Metrics” are designed to help educators and administrators target resources and supports at the individual student level, as well as to inform broader conversations at the aggregate level about advising policies and programs.

Over the course of a year, ESG provided individualized coaching and support to participating district teams to analyze their data, assess their internal and external capacity for implementation, identify ways to leverage federal and state funding, and align efforts to their broader district strategy for college and career readiness. Districts also had the opportunity to engage with and learn from other districts across the state through network-wide convenings and, in Tennessee, a statewide community of practice.

This work is also supported by partnerships with state and local intermediaries, including the Texas Impact Network, Education Equals Economics Alliance (E3), RGV Focus, Tarrant To & Through Partnership (T3), and TN SCORE.
